Orange juice on the sofa: how to remove an orange juice stain

One of the most popular juices is orange juice. Among the most common stains upholstery cleaning specialists deal with are precisely orange juice stains. But do you always need to call in a sofa cleaning professional after spilling juice on your couch, or is it still possible to save the sofa on your own and spare the family budget? Today we’re going to look at why orange juice stains are so persistent, on which types of sofas they turn into a real nightmare, what mistakes “lock” them into the fabric, which products should never be used, and of course, the most effective DIY methods to fight orange juice stains.

Why are orange juice stains difficult to remove?
The natural colorants that give orange juice its vibrant hue, together with its high acidity, allow the pigments to penetrate deep into the upholstery fibers and dye them. On top of that, the high sugar content makes orange juice stains crystallize quickly, leaving behind a sticky trace that attracts dirt particles.

On which sofas should you avoid drinking orange juice?
If your sofa is upholstered in natural fabrics (linen, cotton, silk) or viscose, we strongly recommend avoiding orange juice or orange-based cocktails while sitting on it. Because of the high acidity, the pigments settle deeply into the fabric and stain the fibers. Removing an orange juice stain from a white linen or cotton sofa is extremely difficult, especially if the stain is several days old and the pigments were not neutralized right away. Research has shown that the chances of completely removing an orange juice stain from light-colored, natural upholstery are only about 25%, and for silk, barely 5%.

Fatal mistakes when trying to save your sofa from an orange juice stain

  • Using soap or baking soda: applying alkalis to neutralize acids triggers an exothermic reaction. The sugars “bake” into the fibers. According to AISE studies (2024), using baking soda without rinsing with cold water when trying to clean an orange juice stain leads to fabric yellowing in 83% of cases.
  • Using a steam cleaner or hot water: applying heat before neutralizing pigments and sugars sets the stain permanently into the upholstery.
  • Using stain removers unsuitable for upholstery: can lock the stain in forever.
  • Using detergents without enzymes or oxygen-based bleach: may fix the pigments in place and cause yellow halos.

What to do if orange juice spills on the sofa?

  • Use paper towels or toilet paper to absorb the excess juice from the surface (do not rub).
  • With a clean towel and cold water, dampen the affected area and gently blot until the stickiness disappears (the goal is to dissolve the sugar and pigments).
  • Once the sugar is neutralized, mix white vinegar with warm water in a 1:1 ratio and apply to the area (do not rub, just press). This helps neutralize the pigments.
  • Dissolve 30 g of Ariel washing powder with oxygen bleach in 250 ml of warm water (until fully dissolved). Using a clean sponge, apply to the stain and let sit for 5–10 minutes. A baby laundry detergent with enzymes also works.
  • Remove the detergent with a clean towel moistened in warm water. It is important to completely remove the detergent; otherwise, it will attract dirt (rinse the towel frequently under running water).
  • With the dry part of the towel, absorb the remaining moisture from the sofa.
  • If the stain is still visible after this, use OxiClean: dissolve it in hot water (60–70 °C / 140–160 °F) and apply to the stain. To boost the effect, you may add a teaspoon of dish soap or liquid detergent. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then remove the product in the same way as described above.

⚠️ Attention: This removal method is effective only on sofas with synthetic upholstery and only if they don’t have other stains or built-up dust. If your sofa has accumulated dust and is rarely vacuumed, water marks are likely to appear after drying. In that case, you’ll need professional cleaning. However, the most important step will already be done: neutralizing the pigments. A professional cleaning will then eliminate the dirt.

Conclusion
An orange juice stain is a tough enemy, especially on natural fabric upholstery. The main task when juice is spilled is to neutralize pigments and sugars. The faster you act, the more likely you are to save the sofa. Remember: never use hot water, steam, or scrub with a hard brush before neutralizing sugars and pigments. If water halos appear after cleaning, it means the sofa had dirt buildup and requires professional cleaning.
